About
Oh, sweet Alice. She just says what's on her mind. You never know what's going to come out of her mouth, but you can guarantee it's going to make you laugh. Her small-town upbringing made her that way and it's the cutest thing ever. She likes to have friends over to talk about the latest story circling the town, and while they sit around and share, she always makes sure to have Alice's Apple Bars ready to nibble on. Something about that flaky, buttery crust surrounding the sweet, cinnamon and apple filling makes her girl time that much more fun. So, grab your favorite warm beverage, a friend or two, and gab away while snacking on Alice's Apple Bars!
Ingredients
- For the crust and topping:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, divided
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups cold butter, divided
- 5 tablespoons ice water
- 1 cup sugar
- For the apple filling:
- 8 cups tart apples, such as Granny Smith, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 -Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Step 3 -Place 2 cups of the flour and the salt in food processor and pulse until it is blended.
Step 4 -Add 1 cup of the butter to the flour mixture and pulse, until the butter forms into pea-sized balls. Then, slowly add in just enough of the ice water to form moist crumbs.
Step 5 -Press the crust mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Step 6 -Bake the crust until the edges are lightly browned, about 20-25 minutes.
Step 7 -Transfer the baking dish to a wire rack to cool.
Step 8 -In a large bowl, add the apples, 1 cup of the sugar, and the cinnamon and toss to coat.
Step 9 -Spoon the apple mixture over the crust.
Step 10 -Place the remaining flour, the remaining butter, and the remaining sugar in the food processor and pulse until coarse crumbs form.
Step 11 -Sprinkle the topping mixture over the apple mixture.
Step 12 -Bake the apple bar mixture until the top is golden-brown and the apples are tender, about 1 hour-1 hour 10 minutes.
Step 13 -Let the apple bars cool completely on a wire rack.
Step 14 -Cut into serving-size bars and serve.
