Skip the takeout and prepare Chicken Chow Mein at home! With just 20 minutes of prep and cooking time, this dish will be ready in less time than it would take you to order in. This meal is a savory, hearty mixture of chow mein noodles, tender chicken, fresh veggies like green cabbage and carrots, and a homemade sweet and sticky sauce made of soy sauce, oyster sauce, and honey! Chicken Chow Mein is a restaurant-quality dish that you can whip up yourself in practically no time!
Ingredients
- For the sauce:
- 4 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons low-sodium chicken broth or water
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon honey or sugar, optional
- For the stir fry:
- 6 ounces chow mein noodles or spaghetti noodles
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 pound chicken thighs or breasts, boneless, skinless, and cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 cups green cabbage, shredded
- 1 cup carrots, julienned
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 green onions, optional, chopped
- 1 cup bean sprouts, optional
Directions
Step 1 -Add all the soy sauce, the chicken broth, the oyster sauce, the cornstarch, the sesame oil, and the honey together and whisk well in a large mixing bowl.
Step 2 -Set the sauce mixture aside.
Step 3 -Cook the noodles according to the package directions.
Step 4 -Drain the noodles and set them aside.
Step 5 -In a heavy skillet or a wok, heat the vegetable oil over high heat.
Step 6 -Add the chicken and sear for 1 minute.
Step 7 -Add in 1 tablespoon of the previously prepared sauce.
Step 8 -Cook until the chicken pieces are golden brown and fully cooked through at 165 degrees F, about 3-5 minutes.
Step 9 -Add the cabbage, carrots, and garlic into the same hot wok or skillet.
Step 10 -Cook for 2 minutes, making sure to stir every 15-20 seconds.
Step 11 -Continuing to work in the wok or skillet, add in the prepared noodles, green onions, bean sprouts, and the remaining prepared sauce.
Step 12 -Cook together for 1 minute, lightly stirring the whole time.
Step 13 -Remove the pan or wok from the heat.
Step 14 -Serve immediately.
