George Washington may not have cut down a cherry tree, but he did have a massive sweet tooth. George Washington's Apple Berry Crumble would have been the sort of dessert he loved. Jammy apples, tart cranberries, and sweet blackberries mixed with smoky brown sugar and fragrant vanilla bubble away under a crunchy, buttery, and delicately spiced crumble topping. With plenty of ice cream (just the way our first president liked it) George Washington's Apple Berry Crumble is a patriotic dessert!
Ingredients
- For the crumble:
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1/2 cup coconut sugar or granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger
- For the filling:
- 3 medium or 2 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled and sliced
- 2 cups cranberries, fresh or frozen
- 2 cups blackberries, fresh or frozen
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons tapioca starch
- vanilla ice cream, optional, to taste, for serving
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 -In a bowl, add the flour, the rolled oats, the salt, the melted butter, the coconut sugar, the cinnamon, the nutmeg, and the ginger and stir to combine.
Step 3 -In a separate bowl, add the apple slices, the cranberries, the blackberries, the brown sugar, the vanilla extract, and the lemon juice and stir to combine.
Step 4 -Add the tapioca starch to the filling mixture and toss to combine.
Step 5 -In a 9-inch pie dish, skillet, or casserole dish, add the filling mixture and spread it out evenly.
Step 6 -Top the filling mixture with the crumble mixture.
Step 7 -Bake until the top is golden-brown and the filling is slightly bubbly, about 50 minutes.
Step 8 -Transfer the crumble from the oven and allow it cool slightly.
Step 9 -Serve with the ice cream.
