Incredible French Onion Dip is the perfect party dip, isn't it? Tangy, creamy, and loaded with caramelized onions... mmm, caramelized onions! Golden and just a touch sweet and savory. There's nothing like homemade caramelized onions.... except for Incredible French Onion Dip of course! Grab your chips and dive in!
Ingredients
- For the caramelized onions:
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 4 medium yellow onions, halved then sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- For the dip:
- 1 (8-ounce) container sour cream
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons chives, optional, to taste, chopped, for topping
- potato chips, optional, to taste, for serving
Directions
Step 1 -In a 12-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat, add the oil.
Step 2 -Add the onions to the hot oil and cook, while stirring, until they begin to soften, about 5 minutes.
Step 3 -Add 1/2 teaspoon of the salt to the onions.
Step 4 -Reduce the heat to medium-low.
Step 5 -Cook the onions, while stirring them every few minutes, until the onions are very soft, golden-brown, and caramelized, about 50 minutes-1 hour 20 minutes.
Step 6 -In a small bowl, add the sour cream, 1/2 cup of the caramelized onions, the onion powder, the remaining salt, and the black pepper and stir to combine. Reserve any remaining caramelized onions for a separate use or add as a garnish on top of the dip.
Step 7 -Cover the dip and allow it to chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
Step 8 -Top the dip with the chives.
Step 9 -Serve with the potato chips.
