Old-Fashioned Cherry Crisp puts the cherry on top of your day! The cherry filling is sweet, tart, and juicy, with notes of citrus and floral vanilla. The topping is crunchy, buttery, and enchanted with the delicious flavor of cinnamon. Old-Fashioned Cherry Crisp proves that sometimes the old ways really are the best ways, because this is one dessert you just can't put down. Don't forget the vanilla ice cream to add a lovely touch of creaminess to this already incredible dessert!
Ingredients
- For the cherry filling:
- 5 cups cherries, pitted, sweet or sour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon pure almond extract
- For the topping:
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or yogurt, optional, for serving
Directions
Step 1 -Place an oven rack in the center position.
Step 2 -Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Step 3 -Lightly coat a 9x9-inch or a 7x11-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
Step 4 -In a large bowl, gently stir the cherries, granulated sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla, and almond extract together.
Step 5 -Pour the cherry mixture into the prepared baking dish in an even layer. Make sure you pour in any accumulated juices at the bottom of the bowl as well.
Step 6 -In a medium bowl, stir together the oats, all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and kosher salt.
Step 7 -Pour in the melted butter and stir until the mixture is combined and evenly moistened.
Step 8 -Sprinkle the topping mixture over the cherries in an even layer.
Step 9 -Bake until the filling is bubbly and the topping is golden, for about 30-40 minutes.
Step 10 -Let the crisp stand for 10 minutes.
Step 11 -Serve warm with the ice cream.
